Modeling dispersed heat distribution network in Smallworld

Globema implemented DH.GIS at ECO Group. DH.GIS is a Smallworld-based system designed for heat distribution network modeling and management. ECO (Energetyka Cieplna Opolszczyzny) is one of the largest Polish district heating network operators. The main goal of the project was to streamline and optimize management of dispersed, multi-city heat network managed by ECO and its subsidiaries.

About ECO Group

ECO Group began operations in 1998 as a local DSO. Today, following a series of successful acquisitions in the heat distribution and production market, ECO renders services across almost half of Poland and are looking to win more clients across the rest of Poland. The primary object of the Group is to generate, transmit, distribute and sell heat and electrical energy, while ECO Serwis engages in heat transmission and distribution and specialises in comprehensive supervision, repair and investment operations for heat networks, stations and sources. ECO Logistyka  trades in heat, in particular supplies coal across the Group and renders specialised services as the Environmental Protection Laboratory.

Project schedule and scope

In the first stage of the project Globema delivered all standard solution components and related licenses. Next, data from digital sources had been migrated into DH.GIS. The system was loaded with heat nodes, heat sources, line segments etc. During the data migration, Globema & ECO consultants conducted technical and business analyses aimed to specify integration methods and flow between selected DH.GIS components, ERP system and other internal IT tools used at ECO. Apart from the core DH.GIS functionality, the following modules were implemented:

  • DH.GIS Dispatcher
  • DH.GIS Outages
  • DH.GIS Alarm network
  • DH.GIS Calculations

The project was completed with professional trainings followed by production roll-out. ECO plans extend DH.GIS further and invest in DH.GIS add-ons and other system components in 2016.

Implementation results

The main result of the project is the obtaining of central platform with unified database for end-to-end dispersed heat network management for all ECO subsidiaries. Other implementation results are:

  • possibility of comprehensive reporting and easy data access
  • streamline of new customer connections
  • dispatching support
  • optimal (precise) network regulation
